It’s an industry wide reality that Flash will no longer be supported by Adobe and web browsers after December 31, 2020. What is Going on with Facebook Gameroom?

The vision of Facebook Gameroom has always been to build communities through gaming which in turn means to create a high-value platform for all developers. The platform is for developers to have the support they need to grow their games and business. In order to make sure that developers experience continued product support and a platform that complies with the highest security standards, Facebook gaming will end new game submissions for web Games by December 31, 2020, and the Gameroom will be closed entirely on June 30, 2021. Then both Facebook Gameroom and web Games on the platform host many Flash games that will be removed due to the Flash end of Life.

What does this Mean if you Have a Game Live on Gameroom?

At this point, there are many options for developers to continue their success on and off Facebook Gameroom and gaming platform;

Flash Games

For the Flash games that will be deprecated, you can migrate users to other games of your choice on the platform or to a game’s page on Facebook.

HTML5 Games

  • If you’re using the platform and have an HTML5 game that currently surfaces on Gameroom, Facebook is removing the Gameroom access point to the game after June 30, 2021. But then it will automatically point all players to the same game on Facebook.com so they can continue to play.
  • Please double check that your game is actually set to “HTML5” by going to https://developers.facebook.com/apps/. From there, select your app settings dashboard and do the needed.

Native Games

As for Native games, they will be playable until June 30, 2021, and it will be deactivated after the closure of Gameroom. Then for the Native games that will be deprecated, Facebook will migrate users to other games of your choice or to a game’s Facebook Page.

What does this mean if you want to Submit a New Game to Web Games on Facebook?

Launching new games will be impossible starting from January 1, 2021. However, players can play existing games uninterrupted. This means;
  • After July 1, 2020, developers can no longer configure a newly created App ID to launch on Facebook Web Games.
  • However, you may configure an existing App ID for Web Games on Facebook until December 31, 2020.
  • If you have an existing App ID that’s not live yet, you may still submit it for App Center review and launch it before December 31, 2020.
  • If you have an existing game live on Web Games on Facebook or Gameroom, you can continue to update and maintain it. Please note that Gameroom will close permanently after June 30, 2021.
